Working exclusively with black ink, French artist Nicolas Jolly combines the timeless elegance of monochrome with precise detailing in order to create deeply evocative works that remain in the mind long after the eye has wandered.
He uses the ‘fingerprint’ technique, which uses short, precise strokes to create works with complex detailing much like a human fingerprint. Through the careful use of this method, he guides the eye of the observer through the key features of the image he has created – and there is always more than at first meets the eye.
At the heart of Nicolas’ work is chiaroscuro, the strong contrast between light and dark. With expert use of this technique, he amplifies the depth and perspective of his work to create desirable art that is at once contemporary and classic, and laden with atmosphere.
